Northumbria University's Library Team Shortlisted For Industry Awards

Northumbria University's Library team has been shortlisted for the prestigious International Information Industry Awards.

Hosted by Online Information 2006 and Information World Review, the awards offer the chance for the global industry to recognise the achievements of information teams, information and content management projects, vendors and
individual information professionals.

The team faces stiff competition from the Open University, the British Library, Kirklees Council and the Government Office Network team in the category of best team in the academic and public sectors.

The winner will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in London on 29 November.

The team was nominated for the University's hugely successful search engine - NORA - which enables users to search for information from multiple sources at the same time. These sources include 300 databases and 22,000 e-journals.

NORA has enabled these sources -representing an investment in online information services of more than £750,000 per year to be accessed more easily.

Professor Jane Core, Director of Library and Learning Services, said: "Searching with NORA is as powerful and simple as Google. It gives our staff and students the leading edge by helping them get the most out of our
outstanding collection of eLibrary materials.

"NORA has proved incredibly popular. Since the launch in February, NORA has handled 237,000 search sessions and made more than five million searches of the eLibrary's resources."

NORA is based on a WebFeat Technology solution that is already widely used by Princeton University and other top US institutions.

Todd Miller, President of WebFeat, said: "Northumbria has clearly set the bar for the new UK standard for federated searching.

Professor Core added: "To be shortlisted for this award is a tremendous achievement. Good management, vision and commitment on the part of the library team has helped ensure NORA has been a hugely successful project and it's great to see the hard work rewarded in this way."
