Ontopia Unveils Ontopoly At Online Information 2005
Ontopoly, a new web-based tool for creating, populating and managing corporate ontologies, will be launched by Ontopia at Online Information 2005. This latest addition to the Ontopia Knowledge Suite significantly lowers the bar for developing and maintaining ontologies, even for first-time users.
"The point of a corporate ontology (or corporate taxonomy, as some people call it) is to provide a common framework for describing information and capturing knowledge within and across organizations," said Steve Pepper, Ontopia's Chief Strategy Officer. "Using a common ontology makes it easier to connect, share and reuse knowledge: the ontology acts as a knowledge hub linking information that comes from different sources and systems. Ontopoly helps you create that hub."
Whether a corporation uses a taxonomy, a thesaurus or an ontology for its knowledge organization, Ontopoly can be used to define the underlying structure and populate the knowledge base: "The purpose of Ontopoly is two-fold," said Pam Gennusa, CEO. "It serves the needs of the people who design the ontology, and also those who provide its content. With its user-friendly interface, Ontopoly greatly simplifies the tasks of both."
Ontopoly provides an ideal interface for the subject matter experts who design the ontology’s underlying model. The knowledge base is then populated through a combination of automated processing and human intellectual effort. Using the Ontopia Knowledge Suite, integrators can aggregate content from databases, documents and web feeds. Additional, "tacit" knowledge and links to information resources (as required) can then be added manually using Ontopoly's ontology-driven interface.
"The key to Ontopoly's power and flexibility is that it is based on the ISO Topic Maps standard," said Steve Pepper. "I'd say it was our 'secret sauce', except that we don’t keep it a secret. But it is a tremendous advantage: it allows Ontopoly to support any kind of knowledge structure, ranging from simple indexes and taxonomies, through thesauri and glossaries, to full-blown ontologies; it is also our customers' guarantee for data longevity and vendor independence."
Ontologies built using Ontopoly can be used to organize portals, structure Content Management Systems, drive auto classification of information, and underpin many other processes, thereby providing a foundation for total knowledge management and publishing solutions based on semantic technology.
Visit the Ontopia booth (#40) at Online Information for a demonstration of Ontopoly and the rest of the Ontopia Knowledge Suite, visit the Ontopia website at www.ontopia.net, or write to Ontopia at info@ontopia.net. A free version of Ontopoly will be available for download together with the Omnigator, Ontopia's popular Topic Maps browser.
