R. R. Bowker To Launch New Publisher Database For UK

R. R. Bowker, the provider of bibliographic information in North America, will soon directly collect, manage and maintain bibliographic information regarding all books, audio books and videos published in the United Kingdom.

This expansion of service is aimed to deliver a competitive UK information solution to information researchers, library professionals and retail buyers.

Bowker has more than 130 years of experience in bibliographic data management and dissemination, and Bowker's Books In Print database is the established authority for book information in the US. Now, leveraging the experience and efficiencies gained through its US operation, Bowker intends to raise the level of bibliographic data offered through their international database: Global Books In Print.

Launched in 1995, Global Books In Print a database of English language titles, and is already used throughout the global publishing, retail and library sectors as a reference source. In addition to providing up-to-date English-language title information, Global Books In Print is expanding to include non-English-language titles, beginning with Spanish-language titles from 23 markets.

In light of this announcement, Bowker will not renew its license for UK data with Nielsen Bookdata expiring on March 30th 2005.

"We have enjoyed our partnership with Nielsen Bookdata and look forward to working with them on business initiatives in which our interests are compatible," said Michael Cairns, President of R. R. Bowker. "However, we believe we will be in a better position to satisfy our customers' data requirements if we manage the collection effort directly. We are looking forward to working with the UK publisher community on this effort."
