UK Museums Publish Update On Research For Holocaust and World War II
Museums and galleries throughout the UK have published a further update on their research into the provenance of works in their collections covering the period 1933-45.
The latest findings of the spoliation research programme - funded by MLA - are now available on the National Museum Directors' Conference (NMDC) website: www.nationalmuseums.org.uk/spoliation.html
The website includes reports on the research being undertaken by the UK's national museums and 23 leading local authority and university museums, and a searchable database of works of art with uncertain provenance. In publishing this information, NMDC aims to advertise as widely as possible the details of specific works of art, the whereabouts and ownership of which cannot with confidence by specified for the years 1933-1945.
The intention is primarily to assist with the worldwide search for works of art that may have been wrongly taken during the Holocaust and World War II.
Works that are listed on the website are not suspicious but their history for the WWII period is unknown and it is hoped that people will come forward with information that can confirm their provenance.
Members of the public and potential claimants who have any information about the provenance of the works listed, or any other works in the museums' collections, should write or e-mail the relevant institution with details of their enquiry.
For any general enquiries about the report, please contact: National Museum Directors' Conference Office on 020 7416 5202; Fax 020 7415 5485.
