Dynix celebrates 20th birthday with web seminar series
Dynix is beginning celebrations for the company's 20th anniversary. Founded in August 1983, Dynix has been through a number of changes over the last two decades, but has emerged today as a library automation solutions provider.
Formal celebrations of the 20th anniversary will be held at this year's CODI/HUG conference, held November 5-7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In tandem with its twentieth anniversary, Dynix, has announced that more than 2,000 people have participated in the Dynix Institute Web Seminar Series, which Dynix offers free of charge as a service to librarians. Dynix Institute was designed to provide ongoing forums for continuing education and professional development within the library community.
Announced at ALA Midwinter in January 2003 and formally launched in February, the Dynix Institute Web seminars are vendor-neutral educational sessions which have been hosted by some of the most influential thought leaders in the library industry, including the editor of Library Technology Guides, Marshall Breeding, who presented a June 5 seminar entitled "Chief Considerations in Choosing an ILS System."
"It's important for librarians to have a place where they can share information and learn from the experiences of their colleagues in the industry. I found the Dynix Institute to be a great and novel venue for delivering a presentation on a timely topic," said Breeding. "Also, because the folks at Dynix in no way influenced me to shape my talk around their products and services, it gave me the freedom to do an honest and objective treatment of the issues."
"We have a very small staff and too much work, so getting away for training can be difficult," said Margaret Steger, Education Center Librarian for Regina Public Schools. "I appreciate opportunities like this to gather information and help me keep on top of things."
To work around potential schedule conflicts for would-be attendees and time zone barriers for international participants, Dynix Institute Web seminars are recorded and archived for free download at: www.DynixInstitute.com.
The Dynix Institute Web Seminar Archive provides the library community with an on-demand resource for professional development, available 24 hours a day.
"The Dynix Institute Web seminars I've attended have been very convenient and helpful. The use of technology is a nice example of how it can be done," said Alice Weber, Acquisitions Librarian at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah. "Also, making the archive available to those who cannot attend the live seminar, and allowing those of us who did to refresh, is very valuable."
Upcoming programs feature Director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom Judith Krug, who is scheduled to present at this year's joint conference of Customers of Dynix Inc. and the Horizon Users' Group in Salt Lake City, UT, on November 6. Dr. Carla Hayden, President of the American Library Association, will speak on "Equity of Access" on November 19.
