42 A TAXAURUS OF ENGINEERING TERMS
This article describes the contruction de novo of a set of subject headings covering the disciplines of mechanical engineering, and associated subject areas of relevance to the work of a company of engineering consultants operating in the field of automotive engineering and of heavy duty engine engineering. The term "taxaurus" has been coined to express the nature of the set, which aims to encompass the primary terminology and the major concepts in the subject fields addressed, but cannot claim to reflect the elaborate structure of a traditional thesaurus. The reasons for this shortfall are discussed in the article.
