Children's Literature Festival

Southbank Centre welcomes a host of top writers, poets, performers and childrens authors for its annual Imagine: Childrens Literature Festival. The theme of this years festival of words is humour, comedy, jokes and games, especially designed for children, aged between 5 and 11 years. Featuring storytelling, fiction, poetry, stand-up comedy and music, the festival line-up includes Michael Rosen's A-Z of Poetry (14 February), James Campbell's Comedy 4 Kids (16 February), John Hegleys Crowd of Creatures (18 February), the premiere of Francesca Beard's Animal Olympics (20 February), performances from Philip Ardagh (19 February), Jeremy Strong (21 February) and Eoin Colfer (22 February), who reads from his brilliant adventure story Airman. Renowned performance and poetry specialists Apples & Snakes return to Southbank Centre with a new show called Spin! (22 February). The Imagine festival fun will spill out into the Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall with storytelling chairs, a joke-telling wall, joke tokens to swap and collect across the site and comic workshops in the Comedy Village.

This years Childrens Laureate, Michael Rosen opens the Imagine festival.
Michael has selected two of his favourite poets, John Agard and Val Bloom, to lead the audience on a journey through an A-Z of poetry, which promises to be a rollercoaster ride of rhythms, rhymes, jokes and laughter.

James Campbell, the UKs best comedian for kids, covers everything from penguins to playstations. He creates a wonderful, unusual environment for children to experience real stand-up comedy in a show that appeals to everyone. Comedy 4 Kids has been a huge success all around the world from the Edinburgh Fringe to the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

John Hegley returns to Imagine with his latest show Winter Wonderland, featuring new poems, songs and characters. John is joined by musicians and performers including Andrew Bailey, Diego Brown, The Good Fairies and Keith Moore, and everyone in the audience has an important part to play in this exhilarating participatory show.

Philip Ardagh, the creator of The Further Adventures of Eddie Dickens, is guaranteed to make his audiences laugh as he tells the story of Mad Uncle Jack and the even Madder Aunt Maud. Described as a scrumptious cross between Dickens and Monty Python (Guardian), Philip Ardagh delights with his surreal stories and witty wordplay.

Using songs, poetry and storytelling, Francesca Beard introduces her audiences to characters from the Chinese horoscope in the Animal Olympics. Its 2008 and Rabbit, Dragon, Rat, Rooster and many other animals must compete in their own Chinese Olympic games. Children learn about the characters, and then choose their favourite in the premiere of this exciting new show.

Jeremy Strong brings his irresistible blend of farcical stories and slapstick comedy. Often called the Jacqueline Wilson for boys, he introduces hilarity into real-life situations. The audience can meet Jeremy after the show, when he signs copies of his books.

Spin! is the irresistible new show of storytelling, poetry and music by Apples & Snakes, England's leading organisation for performance poetry. This event features new poems from Kimberly Trusty, a specially commissioned story by the brilliant Sally Pomme Clayton and a guest spot from Slam poet Corbell and live music from DJ John Berkavich.

Eoin Colfer reads from his brilliant adventure story Airman. Conor Broekhart was born to fly in fact he was born flying. Audiences can follow Conors amazing journey with Eoin as he reads and talks about the book and answers questions. Colfer ranks alongside writers like Philip Pullman and Jacqueline Wilson (Sunday Express).
